Derrick’s Jamaican Cuisine
Although many Jamaican dishes are healthy, there’s no denying there’s also a prevalence of salt, rich meats and starch. At Derrick’s, the menu includes a report of heart disease and obesity statistics among African-Americans and the benefit of healthier takes on traditional Jamaican meals. The “healing greens” side here is gently sautéed kale, the jerk options have a nice spice level (the heat accumulates), and in addition to the usual favorites like oxtails and brown stew there are plenty of vegetarian and salad options too. 6806 La Tijera Blvd., Westchester; (310) 641-7572;
