Stephen Marley (born April 20, 1972) is a Jamaican-American reggae singer, musician, producer, and member of Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers, hailing from Wilmington, Delaware, U.S., and Kingston, Jamaica.
Born the second son of iconic reggae legends Bob Marley and Rita Marley, Stephen made his recording debut on the track “Children Playing in the Streets” in 1979, alongside brother Ziggy Marley. The single became the first from Ziggy and his group the Melody Makers, and Stephen’s initial contribution came in the form of playing guitar and occasionally singing – the group went on to win five Grammy awards. On top of performing and recording however Stephen began honing his skills in production and by 1996 has contributed ideas and know-how to his brothers Damian and Julian’s albums.
Stephen, also in 1996, remixed the Fugees, worked with Eve, Krayzie Bone, and Erykah Badu, and produced the popular remix album “Chant Down Babylon”. Inspired by the success, the producer worked once again with his brother Damian in 2001, whose album “Halfway Tree” later won the Grammy for Best Reggae Album. Stephen’s own version of Stevie Wonder’s “Master Blaster” earned the musician significant acclaim, and landed on the Stevie Wonder compilation “Conception”.
Whilst attempting to work on a solo album, Stephen became the go-to guy for his brothers, with the 2002 formation of production house Ghetto Youth with Ziggy, and later worked on Damian’s well-received 2005 album “Welcome to Jamrock”. Stephen’s debut finally arrived in 2007 entitled “Mind Control”, followed by an acoustic take “Mind Control Acoustic” in 2009. The musician’s second full-length “Revelation Pt. 1 – The Root of Life” was issued in 2011 and earned Stephen his first solo Grammy Award in 2012 for Best Reggae Album. Stephen Marley’s follow-up “Revelation Pt. 2 – The Fruit of Life”, was released in 2014, and was supported by an extensive worldwide tour.
